Switzerland is filled with small picturesque villages nestled into the Swiss Alps. It was recommended to me to visit Interlaken, a perfect village to situate yourself in while you spend the sunny summer days exploring the mountains. Now one my favorite places in Europe, here are the best options for what to do while in Interlaken.

Hangglide
If you crave an adrenaline rush, hang gliding is the perfect fix. I went up with Hangglide Interlaken and had an incredible experience soaring over Interlaken. Have you ever wanted to fly like a bird? This is surely the closest you can get. The Hangglide Interlaken team is made up of primarily hilarious Australians that give you free beer and schnapps if you can make it till the end.

Paraglide
If you prefer a relaxing ride and want to focus on taking in the view, paragliding is the way to go. Go up with Skywings for the ultimate experience, specifically with Steve. The ride can be as peaceful or as crazy as you want with the option for tricks at the end. Just make sure you wear secure shoes and can run, since you will be jumping off the side of a mountain!

Hiking

The hiking options surrounding Interlaken are unbeatable. Everything from hiking around Jungfrau to views of valleys below while exploring around Kleine Scheidegg. If you are into the outdoors, there are endless sites to see around this Swiss village.

Jungfrau
Experience the Top of Europe at Jungfraujoch. Reached by a scenic train winding through nearby mountains of Eiger and the Mönch,  Jungfrau is a must-see for mountain lovers. The mountain boasts an ice palace that is open year-around as well as restaurants and shops. Don’t forget to dress warm!

Take the Train to Lauterbrunnen
One of the primary selling points of making your base Interlaken is that it is easily connected by train or bus to other tiny mountain villages. Nearby Lauterbrunnen is known to be one of the inspirations for Rivendell on Lord of the Rings due to it’s 72 waterfalls that line the valley. Do a quick hike up to Staubbach Falls after eating lunch at Flavours and I guarantee you will see why J.R.R. Tolkien easily found his inspiration.

Eat Traditional Swiss Food in Grindelwald
Just a short train from Interlaken, Grindelwald is a beautiful mountain village that turns into a ski resort in the winter. It also is the perfect location to order traditional Swiss cuisine and eat fondue. Visit Bistro Memory in Hotel Eiger and get ready to dip into some real Swiss cheese or try their rosti, another dish often enjoyed within the Swiss Alps. The log cabin ambiance is perfect for a rainy summer night.

With endless options, Interlaken has something for everyone. What’s you favorite activity in this Swiss mountain village?
